This is what the inventor of Ocumetics Bionic Lens, Dr Garth Webb from British Columbia, Canada, stating that patients would have perfect vision and that driving glasses, progressive lenses and that contact lenses would eventually be a dim memory as the eye-care industry goes through a massive transformation.

Webb states that people who have the specialised lenses surgically inserted would never develop cataracts because their natural lenses, which decay over time, would have been replaced.

“Perfect eyesight would be the result, no matter how poor the eyesight was,” Webb says.

He further added that Bionic Lens would be suitable for someone over the age of 25, whose eye structure is fully developed, and who is dependent on corrective lenses…

If a person can barely see a clock at 10 feet, with the Bionic Lens it can clearly been seen at 30 feet away, demonstrating how a custom-made lens that folds like a taco in a saline-filled syringe would be placed in an eye where it would unravel itself within 10 seconds. Webb stated the procedure, which takes approximately eight minutes is painless and identical to cataract surgery. The correction of the patient’s sight is immediate.

Webb, is the CEO of Ocumetics Technology Corp. Spending the past eight years and around $3 million in research and development the Bionic Lens, getting international patents and securing a biomedical manufacturing facility in Delta, B.C.

His work has been fuelled by the obsession he had to free himself, and others, from the need for corrective lenses which he himself had required since early childhood. Says Webb,

“My heroes were cowboys and cowboys just did not wear glasses. At age 45 I had to struggle with reading glasses, which like most people, I found was a great insult. To this day I curse my progressive glasses. I also wear contact lens, which I also curse just about every day.”

Exciting New Technology

The culmination of Webb’s work was at a recent presentation of the lens to 14 top opthalmologists in San Diego the day prior to an annual gathering of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Opthalmologist Dr Vincent DeLuise, who teaches at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, states he arranged several meetings on April 17, when experts in various fields were introduced to the Bionic Lens. He stated the surgeons from Canada, The United States, Australia and the Dominican Republic, were impressed with the presentation and some will be involved in clinical trials for Webb’s Bionic Lens.

The Bionic Lens have created excitement among very experienced surgeons and although they’ve seen products not work in the past, they believe that this might actually work and are all eager to be part of the advisory board to help Webb on his journey, according to DeLuise.

“I think this device is going to bring us closer to the holy grail of excellent vision at all ranges – distant, intermediate and close.” Webb states.

Clinical Trials On Animals and Blind Humans

Pending clinical trials on animals and then blind human eyes, the Bionic Lens could be available in Canada and elsewhere in about two years, depending on regulatory processes in various countries.

As for laser surgery, which requires the burning away of healthy corneal tissue and includes potential problems with glare, the need for nighttime driving glasses and later cataracts developing, Webb states the Bionic Lens may make that option obsolete.
Alongside his Bionic Lens venture, Webb has set up a foundation called the Celebration of Sight, which would donate money to organizations providing eye surgery in developing countries to improve quality of life.

“Perfect eyesight should be a human right” Webb says.

DeLuise, who has been asked to manage the foundation, says funds would also be funnelled to some of the world’s best eye research institutes. “He has the technology that may make all of this happen”, he says, adding that several companies have spent tens of millions of dollars trying to develop a similar lens, though none have come close.

8-Year-Old Albino Siberian Girl Receives Tons of Modeling Offers

Siberian Russia, one of the coldest regions in the world, is home to 8-year-old Nariyana. The little girl was born with a very rare form of albinism, which means she looks quite different than the rest of her family. Referred to as “Snow White,” Nariyana is having a huge impact on the modeling world.

Photographer Vadim Rufov had the chance to work with Nariyana, and the two of them did a photoshoot that has led to Nariyana’s recent unexpected internet fame. The modeling offers began pouring in shortly after photos from the shoot were released, but the girl’s mother, Elena, says she wants to keep her daughter out of the limelight. At least for now.

Elena says that although they have gotten numerous offers from modeling and advertising agencies, she doesn’t want Nariyana to work yet. She wants her daughter to have a normal childhood and grow up without the pressures of the modeling industry. Elena says, “When she grows up, she’ll choose who she wants to be for herself. When I ask her now, she says she wants to be a model.”

Photographer Vadim Rufov says that Nariyana is the most unusual person he’s ever met. In a photograph he captured of Nariyana and her cousin together, you can really see just how incredibly different she looks from her family. He speaks of her artistic qualities and says she spent over two hours posing for him during the shoot, something that most 8 year olds would not have the attention span for.

It’s understandable that Nariyana’s family wants to keep her out of the spotlight and focus on more “kid” things like drawing and dancing, both of which Nariyana absolutely loves.

Whatever Nariyana decides for her future, it’s sure to be bright, successful, and surrounded with the love of family.

Woman Has Brilliant Response to Hurtful Comment About the Color of her Skin

19-year-old Mimi Mbah from Gaithersburg, Maryland is a college student and aspiring model who has recently experienced some hurtful comments about the color of her skin.

A Twitter page that’s “dedicated to all the beautiful Africans worldwide” shared some of Mbah’s modeling photos. While the photos received a ton of positive comments, they also received some negative ones. One man wrote “If she was lighter, she’d be fire.”

Rather than letting the comment cause her self-esteem to take a blow, she decided to simply tweet back “No thanks, I wouldn’t change my skin color for the world. Still fire though.” Her reply led to a huge amount of positive support from women (and men) all over the world. The tweet gained over 56,000 likes and was retweeted over 20,000 times.

She wasn’t surprised by the rude comment, because she’s seen women all over the internet being shamed for no other reason than their skin color. She told BuzzFeed News, “It’s happened to me before and I think almost every dark skin girl can say the same too.”

Although she wasn’t surprised by it, she says it’s hard to believe that racism is still alive today. She expressed her sadness towards how cruel society can still be.

Mbah says she’s glad that her tweet went viral. She went on to say, “now I feel like I have a platform which I want to use to talk about things like that and give advice to other dark skin women who are going through similar situations and probably blaming themselves for it.”

She wanted to explain why she felt the need to reply to the man’s comment. She says it wasn’t because she felt like she had to have the last word or because she wanted to start an argument. Rather, it was because she “wanted people to see that colorism is still real. It’s nice to know that my confidence could help others.”

Go, girl!

Almond Milk’s Dirty Little Secret

Published

on

Advertisements

In recent years, almond milk has become increasingly popular. Almonds are an incredibly healthy super-food, so almond milk is probably great for you too, right? Nope.

While it’s true that almond milk does contain some of the nutrion as almonds, it’s also filled with sweeteners, water, and unnatural additives. Did you know that your average brand-name almond milk really only contains 2 percent almonds?

So not only are you paying an outrageously high price, but you’re not getting nearly the amount of nutrition that you think you are. Instead, you’re giving your body tons of sugar, one of the most harmful ingredients. So what does that mean for you and your family’s health?

Sugar contains literally zero nutritional value. But yet it’s the most common added ingredient in foods and drinks today. When you think of sugar, you probably think of candy or soda. But did you know there’s sugar in sauces, dressings, even soups? One of the biggest risks of a high-sugar diet is tooth decay.

Advertisements

Beverages are one of the biggest concern in regards to tooth decay. When the sugar in that cup of juice or soda reacts with the plaque on your teeth, dangerous acids are produced which can essentially “eat away” at the teeth. Even sugar-free drinks contain harmful additives that soften tooth enamel and eventually can rot teeth. This happens very easily in children since their teeth aren’t as strong and developed as adults’ are.

So, it’s in your best interest to throw away that almond milk and switch back to dairy milk, what we all drank before the almond milk crazy began. If that doesn’t sound like something you’d like to do, try making your own homemade healthy almond milk. It’s simpler than you’d think and you’ll be skipping out on all that added sugar.
