Obese Idaho Woman Makes Incredible Transformation for Herself and Children

‘People were afraid they may catch my fatness’

After a car accident in 2011, Shantel Chiola became temporarily immobile, suffering from serious neck injury and a stroke.

“For four weeks, I was not allowed to move past a 30 degree angle, and during this time the weight started to pile on. And I struggled to get it off,” Shantel explains. “Because of the stroke, I was unable to move the left side of my body for six months.”

Because the mother from Burley, Idaho was unable to fully function, she relied strictly on convenient food options.

“I was eating horrible. I would eat fast-food for almost every meal because I was too tired to get up and make a healthy meal,” she said.

In 2014, after the birth of her son, Shantel began to gain more weight. Eventually, she reached 311 pounds.

“I was miserable. I hated leaving the house and I felt bad that my husband had to be seen with me because he is in fairly good shape, and when he met me I wasn’t obese,” she said.

She explains, “People would treat me like I wasn’t intelligent and would talk down to me. It’s almost as if people were afraid they may catch my fatness.”

After a visit to the doctor, Shantel learned that she was pre-diabetic. The news served as a wakeup call to her.

“I was even more driven to lose weight because I couldn’t keep up with my 2-year-old,” she said.

In 2016, she began her incredible transformation. Shantel looks like a new woman today. She says she’s incredibly thankful to have her life back; not only for herself, but for her family as well.

She adds, “My one piece of advice I could give anyone is to not give up and that you are worth it.”
