There are always new strange fashion trends going viral, but this is one that we never saw coming.
People are making all sorts of clothing out of IKEA bags. You know, the big blue iconic bag that you probably have one of stuffed in a closet somewhere.
So where did this trend come from? Well, last week the company Balenciaga put an oversized blue tote bag on the market, priced at $2,145. It took literally a few minutes for the internet to point out that the bag looked exactly like Ikea’s $0.99 tote.
Instagrammers began to use Ikea bags to create DIY clothing and accessories, and the results are hilarious. (Search for #ikeabag on Insta and see for yourself).
Among the most popular so far have been a baseball cap, high top trainer, dress, corset, bra and underwear set, tracksuit, backpack, wallet, and even a thong. The possibilities are endless.
Stella Monteiro, a sales leader for Ikea said:
“We are extremely flattered to seemingly be an inspiration for the latest catwalk designs. Our IKEA FRAKTA tote is one of our most iconic products which are already owned and loved by millions.”
Another Ikea spokesperson told TODAY that they were “deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents.” He continued to say, “Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag.”
