17-year-old Priscilla Samey of Minnesota didn’t get asked to her senior prom, but she didn’t let it bother her. Instead of a date, Samey took her Harvard University acceptance letter to prom.
“Couldn’t find a man to accept me for prom so I took a college that did. #Harvard2021 #prom2k17,” she tweeted.
The tweet gained instant attention and Samey received tons of positive comments from people praising her for her accomplishment and perspective on prom.
Harvard was one of the seven Ivy League schools that accepted Samey. She also was accepted to Yale, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Columbia, and Brown. Harvard offered her the best deal though – a full scholarship!
The teen says her sister gave her the idea to go to prom with her acceptance letter. Her sister told her, “The best one [date] is all your college admissions.”
Samey jokes about how she saved a lot of money by choosing to take her letter rater than a date. She says, “I took a date that was pretty low maintenance, so I didn’t have to pay for his dinner.”
While she was initially nervous to receive negative feedback from her classmates, the exact opposite ended up happening. “They all thought it was so funny and cute. They were all very proud and supportive,” she said while reflecting on the night.
Samey plans to major in political science with a pre-law track at Harvard. She intends to get her Juris Doctorate degree so that she can practice law, as well as a degree in business administration, so that she can move into the business side of law.
She wants to give teens out there applying to colleges some advice. She says “Be true to yourself. There’s a lot of pressure nowadays that there’s a type colleges want. Stick to your roots, and write essays that reflect who you are as a person.”
