A group of incredible and powerful women have come together to build a professional women’s soccer team for LA.
Going by the name, Angel City, they have the vision of bringing a professional women’s soccer team to LA as part of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in 2022.
In Angel City are Natalie Portman, Serena Williams, Eva Longoria, Jessica Chastain, Uzo Aduba, America Ferrera, Jennifer Garner, and Lilly Singh. Also part of the group are 14 former soccer players including Abby Wambach, Mia Hamm, and more.
The top investors in the group are Natalie Portman, Kara Nortman, Julie Uhrman, who acts as the President of Angel City and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
Natalie Portman shared, “I couldn’t be more excited to announce that the #NWSL is coming to LA.”
Julie Uhrman, President of Angel City said in a public letter, “When my friend, Kara Nortman, approached me with the opportunity to help bring a professional women’s soccer team to Los Angeles, I jumped at the chance. Literally, who gets the opportunity to help build a professional team from scratch in their hometown? Who gets to work with their friends, who share a passion for sport and understand how sport can unite and mobilize a community? Kara didn’t have to ask me twice!”?
“Our growing collective of activists, actors, athletes, and entrepreneurs truly believe in LA’s incredible sports culture, and the power of soccer, the most popular sport on Earth. But with nine professional teams and NCAA power houses USC and UCLA, isn’t it high time that we also have a women’s soccer team to rally behind?,” Uhrman wrote.
She concluded, “Our city deserves better. Sports fans deserve better. Players deserve better. And together, we will build something truly unique.”
