The New York City Marathon was scaled back last year in 2021, because of COVID-19, and the year before, 2020, for the full-fledged pandemic, it was completely shut down. This year, the race returned to the city in all its glory. It brought out so many spectators and participants and even some of our favorite celebrities! From That 70s Show‘s Ashton Kutcher to The Office‘s Ellie Kemper, and a few YouTube stars, as well.
First-Ever Marathoner Sharon Lokedi Of Kenya Takes Home Top Prize
Everyone was in great spirits and it was also unseasonably warm. Reports say that the temperature was in the mid-70s, and was the hottest marathon since 1986. Sharon Lokedi of Kenya won the women’s race clocking in at 2 hours, 23 minutes and 23 seconds. Not only did she come in first, but this was also her very first marathon, which is incredible. She crossed the finish line seven seconds before runner-up Lonah Chemtai Salpeter of Israel, and was about 50 seconds off the course record.
Evans Chebet Wins Second Marathon Of The Year
On the men’s side, Evans Chebet of Kenya won, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 41 seconds. Additionally, he finished first at the Boston Marathon earlier this year. Daniel Do Nascimento of Brazil, led the race for 21 miles until he collapsed. He was running a full 2 minutes ahead of the pack until then. He was attended by medical personnel and his condition was updated. Do Nascimento is reportedly to be doing okay.
