Cannes is back, and the Croisette is already delivering. The 2026 Cannes Film Festival opened this week at the Grand Théâtre Lumière with a ceremony hosted by French-Malian actress Eye Haïdara — and before a single film screened, the red carpet had already staked its claim as the event's most compelling act.

The jury lineup alone set a historic tone. Park Chan-wook made history as the first Korean jury president in the festival's history, flanked by a stacked committee that includes Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Ruth Negga, and Stellan Skarsgård, among others. The evening closed with a performance by Theodora and Oklou, followed by a screening of Pierre Salvadori's The Electric Venus. High art and high fashion, coexisting — as they do every May in the South of France.

The Looks That Landed First

According to Vogue, the opening carpet's standout moments came fast. Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu — best known as the imperious Sylvie in Emily in Paris — arrived in a billowing purple Saint Laurent gown courtesy of Anthony Vaccarello, the kind of effortless Gallic drama that makes sense nowhere else on earth. Demi Moore, pulling double duty as both jury member and style moment, chose a form-fitting, embellished Jacquemus look that confirmed she has absolutely no interest in blending into the background. Nor should she.

Two weeks of red carpet still stretch ahead — which means this is barely the opening act. Expect the fashion stakes to climb as competition screenings intensify and the A-list rotates through. Cannes has always operated as its own parallel fashion week, one with stricter dress codes, higher heels, and considerably more existential cinema. The combination is, frankly, unmatched.

When the films are this serious and the clothes are this good, showing up is its own kind of art form.
