Hye Ji Jo's silk chiffon scalloping brought lightness and precision; Naïma Naas delivered a tailored "hunchback" coat that spun open to expose a theatrical red ruffled back — steampunk with a wink, and very much in conversation with the retrofuturism threading through the wider industry right now. Critic Award winner Tyler Mervine went deeper, drawing from Gabriel García Márquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold to build a charcoal coat around an infinite draped loop — a meditation on memory and the permanence of human-made things. His fringed corset is handstitched. ChatGPT had nothing to do with it.
The Work That Wins
Knitwear — notoriously unforgiving — gave the night some of its most expressive moments. Beatrice Xuan Mak paid homage to her home country of Malaysia through saturated, joyful color (Critic Award, look 61), while Rachel Marino's felted sculptural forms pushed the textile somewhere almost architectural. Both felt like a conscious pivot away from heaviness — emotional and otherwise. A children's wear interlude, soundtracked by The Jackson 5's "ABC," broke the bass-heavy runway atmosphere entirely. It was a small, smart gesture: planting the next generation right in the middle of the show.
The evening's top prize went to Marina Malkhasian, whose pleated pieces — warm, quietly nostalgic, shaped by memories of pre-war Russia — will be produced and sold in select Macy's stores next spring. The show was presented in partnership with Macy's, and the stakes are real: last year's winner sold out on the first night at the Herald Square flagship. That's not a soft gesture of institutional support. That's a market signal.
In a moment when the industry keeps asking what human designers are still for, FIT's class of 2026 answered by doing the one thing no model can replicate — finishing the garment.
