Joined by former President Barack Obama for an address to stakeholders ahead of the center's June 19 public opening, she arrived wearing her grief — and her gratitude — on her skirt. Literally.

Working with her longtime stylist Meredith Koop and Swedish house Acne Studios, Obama commissioned a custom calf-length pencil skirt bearing a sepia-toned portrait of her late mother, Marian Robinson, as a young woman. The piece draws from look 29 of the brand's fall 2026 collection, and Obama styled it faithfully to the runway: a brown short-sleeve tee, brown pointy-toe pumps, nothing competing with the image at the center of it all. Robinson, who died in 2024 at 86 years old, was born on Chicago's South Side — the same neighborhood where the Presidential Center now stands, according to Vogue.

Robinson was more than a matriarch in the background. She moved into the White House with the First Family and became, as the Obamas wrote on Medium after her passing, "our rock through it all." The tribute felt inevitable in that context — not performative, but earned. This wasn't a celebrity wearing something provocative for press. It was a daughter finding a way to bring her mother into a room she never got to stand in.

Obama addressed her grief publicly on Instagram in 2025: "We lost my mother a year ago, but somehow, it almost feels like she's with us more and more each day." She described channeling Robinson in everyday moments — advice to her daughters, dinners with Barack, calls with her brother Craig. The custom skirt is an extension of that same impulse: keeping someone close when proximity is no longer possible.
