Nicole Richie and Kate Madden Share a Mismatched Mother-Daughter Moment on the Red Carpet

There's something quietly radical about a mother and daughter who share a bloodline but clearly not a stylist — and Nicole Richie and her 18-year-old daughter Harlow Kate Madden proved exactly that at the Los Angeles pink carpet premiere of Richie's forthcoming action-comedy Stop! That! Train! this week.

Kate — who goes by her middle name — came dressed in full monochromatic conviction: a strapless leather mini, patent knee-high boots, and Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry anchored by a black pendant necklace and white bracelet. A deep red manicure was the only rebellion against the all-black palette. The look was clean, considered, and frankly very grown-up for someone making only her second red carpet appearance alongside her mother. According to Harper's Bazaar, the pair last attended a premiere together over two years ago, for the 2024 remake of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.

Like Mother, Not Like Daughter

Nicole went the opposite direction entirely — and it worked. Styled by Jamie Mizrahi, she wore a Conner Ives Spring 2026 midnight-blue slip dress with a cowl neckline, floor-length hem, and a matching head scarf that felt equal parts old Hollywood and downtown cool. A white fur-trimmed coat and crystal earrings from her own label, House of Harlow, completed the picture. Where Kate was sharp and minimal, Nicole was maximalist and playful — the rare kind of mismatched energy that only reads as intentional when both people actually know what they're doing.

The contrast isn't just aesthetic. It signals something: Kate Madden is not quietly orbiting her mother's spotlight — she's stepping into her own lane with confidence. The daughter of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden has her mother's bone structure, sure, but the styling choices suggest she's writing her own fashion vocabulary.

Two very different silhouettes, one very effective red carpet moment — sometimes the best duo dressing isn't matching at all.
