Why Angelina Jolie Skipped the 2026 Met Gala

Reported by Harper's Bazaar.

The Met Gala has become so culturally inescapable that a celebrity's absence reads almost as a statement in itself. Which makes Angelina Jolie one of the most interesting no-shows in fashion — not once, not twice, but every single year. The woman has walked every other kind of red carpet imaginable, but the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday of May? Still unclimbed.

According to Harper's Bazaar, Jolie has never attended the Met Gala — a fact that feels increasingly deliberate given that invitations have almost certainly landed on her doorstep annually. She's no recluse. Premieres, awards circuits, late-night television, humanitarian stages — she shows up where she wants to show up. The Costume Institute's fundraiser just doesn't appear to be one of them.

What She Missed This Year

The 2026 edition was, by any measure, a heavy-hitter. Co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams, with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez serving as honorary chairs, the evening celebrated the museum's new exhibition, "Costume Art." The show was built around a deceptively layered premise — exploring the relationship between clothing and the body, parsed into subsections covering the pregnant body, the naked body, the aging body, the classical body, the anatomical body, and the mortal body. The dress code, "Fashion is Art," asked guests to come dressed as a living thesis statement on exactly that connection.

It's the kind of conceptual brief that seems tailor-made for someone with Jolie's particular combination of aesthetic authority and cultural gravitas. And yet. Her absence wasn't surprising — it was consistent. There's something almost refreshing about a star of her magnitude who hasn't made the Gala part of her personal brand, who hasn't shown up for the content or the coverage or the callback moment.

Whether it's intentional distance-keeping, a genuine disinterest in the spectacle, or something else entirely, Jolie has turned the Met Gala skip into its own kind of fashion statement — one that gets louder every May.
